Sept 19th, 2006 Today is the start of the Newport Pro Presented by Jeep. Which is a wqs 2 star event. 160 surfers made it into Newports biggest surf contest of the year. As 35th alternate I wasnt sure if would even get into the event. Lucky for me, there were very many no shows and I got put in the first heat of round two. I Made my first heat which puts me in to the round of 96 (third round) tomorrow. -VA


Sept 20th, 2006 Golden and I went back up to Newport today after dawn patrolling base, which was retardedly crowded and walled. Golden got ripped off pretty bad in his first heat of the contest today. He was second for most of the heat until the last couple of minutes Dave Post pulled a pretty sick Air 360 on a very small right. He was rewarded with a 6 for the trick. They announced Golden needed a 4.26 to regain second as he was paddeling into a nuggeting, shoulder high left. He got a decsent first turn then a slash and another turn then the wave started doubling on the inside as it got pretty small and Golden was able to get a couple more manuevers. Soon after the horn blows and his heat is over. They took forever to announce the final result and ended up giving Golden a 4. He got a 4.5 earlier in the heat and the wave was not nearly as good!! I went out in my next heat and ended up being out of rythym and lost fair and square. I got third, beating out Alejandro Moreda from Puerto Rico but Adam Virs got the barrel of the event and scored a 9 for it! Then The guy I was very close to for second got one of the waves of the day during a nice big set and it ran down the beach, alowing him to do multiple turns. golden Said, "If he would have surfed the wave a little better it would have been a ten because that was a riculous wave for today..." He was scored in the 8 point range for the ride. With only a couple minutes left in the heat I sat hoping for some miracle waves to come to me but that didnt happen...I lost all my points last year when I was injured and unable to compete so I guess I am happy to be back doing qs' again and to beable to get some points before the year is over. -VA
