The Super Ankle Break

Here is a picture of the "superman air" that broke my ankle while surfing south jetty. In this shot I am already on the way down. Right when I landed I heard and felt a snap in my leg. I paddled straight in. When I got to the beach I tried to walk but I instantly collapsed. Since I was on the south side of the jetty I had to crawl up the rocks to the north side. At this point my foot was flopping around at the break from the weight of gravity. Lucky for me Joel Mayer was there (the guy that took this picture) because he helped me hop along the beach and he got a couple other guys to help carry me to my truck. I went to the emergency room at tri-city hospital. To my surprise, I was not in the waiting room very long. They took ex-rays of my right ankle and then gave me a shot of demorall in my hip. The doctor said I had a clean break in my fibula but there was something he saw in my ex-ray that he did not like. Because of this, he called the orthopedic who was "on call" that day at the hospital. The orthopedic told me there some separation in my joint that did not look good and he wanted to schedule an appointment to see me in a few days when the swelling goes down. Then they wrapped my ankle in a splint, gave me a prescription for vicodin and sent me home. This was on tuesday, march 29th 2005. On friday the 1st of april I went to see the orthopedic...

I ended up needing surgery which didn't happen until April 11th, 2005...they put a metal plate and 7 screws in my fibula. This is an exray from 5 months after surgery.

7 Band-Aids down 3 to go...

About 2 months after surgery I was able to start puting a little weight on my right side with the help of this boot
